In 1984, Joe Montana was hurling touchdown passes as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Rickey Henderson was hitting homers and stealing bases during his first stint with the Oakland A’s. Ronald Reagan was still in his first term as president, and George Deukmejian had been governor for only a year.

The growth of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta regions during that era created an urgent need for greater concentration of construction engineering expertise, prompting esteemed engineers Tom Wallace, Doug Kuhl and Charles Van Alstine to establish Wallace-Kuhl & Associates in 1984. Tom Wallace regarded engineering as the discipline of “adapting the creations of mankind to the forces of nature.” That view, as reverential as it is pragmatic, became the guiding philosophy that Wallace-Kuhl has embraced throughout the past three decades.

Tom Wallace, Doug Kuhl and Charles Van Alstine have concluded their distinguished professional careers and are now retired, but their founding principles live on. Wallace-Kuhl’s practices set the gold standard for geotechnical engineering services, and Dave Gius, Andy Wallace and the talented members of the present-day Wallace-Kuhl team remain dedicated to exceeding their clients’ expectations.
